Student Paper Prize Winner: “‘We Are Not Your Kind’: Slipknot, Gender and Horror Tropes” by Clare King

Clare King takes on underexplored territory in nuancing the cultural reception of the numetal genre. In grappling with the complex legacy of a group which straddles multiple subgenres within metal more broadly, King addresses the gendering of cultural capital and its impact on aesthetics and fandom.

Clare is a PhD Candidate in Musicology at Western University whose popular music focus lies in the study of hard rock and heavy metal music. She holds a BA with Honors from York University, Toronto, and an MA in Musicology from Dalhousie University, Halifax.

Clare King s’attaque à un territoire sous-exploré en nuançant la réception culturelle du genre numetal. Aux prises avec l’héritage complexe d’un groupe qui chevauche plusieurs sous-genres au sein du métal, King aborde le gendering du capital culturel et son impact sur les esthétiques et les communautés de fans.

Clare est candidate au doctorat en musicologie à Western University et s’intéresse à l’étude de la musique hard rock et heavy métal. Elle a un baccalauréat avec mention de York University à Toronto ainsi qu’une maîtrise en musicologie de Dalhousie University à Halifax.
